What does ‘’Spagyric’’ means?
If you have come across some of our herbal tinctures, you have for sure read the word ”Spagyric”. And maybe did you, as most people, ask yourself what’s that supposed to mean? This is a good question! Well, here comes an explanation and a presentation of the spagyric process to give you a little insight into our everyday work with a bunch of different herbs!
The word Spagyrics comes from ancient Greece and can be divided into two parts. “Spao” = to separate and “Agerio” = to recombine. Spagyric tinctures have its origin in ancient alchemy and have been used since the time of ancient Egyptians. Its purpose is to separate the three basic and fundamental principles of a herb, mineral or metal, then reunite them to transmute it into a more potent form than before. Within alchemy, this was considered a more spiritual and holistic way of creating herbal medicines. As the spagyric method brings together and reunites the three basic principles of a plant.
The three alchemical principles
Sulpur = The soul = Essential oils
Mercury = The mind = Alcohol
Salt = The Body = Mineral salts
The traditional process
When making a ”traditional” or so called ”true spagyric”, you first start with extracting only the essential oils, then you ferment the leftover of the plant material to produce alcohol. Step three is to extract out the mineral salts from the herb thru a calcination/burning process where you burn the leftovers of the plantmaterial. After you burnt the material until the ashes is completly white, you then excract out the salt minerals from the ashes. And finally, you recombine all the three principles to create a spagyric traditional medicine: The oil, the alcohol and the salts.
How we do it
Our range of spagyric tinctures has been extracted with alcohol (the spirit) to solve out the fat and water-soluble components. We Then evaporate the alcohol to get out a full spectrum extract, which includes the essential oils (the soul). During the process, we use vacuum pressure to lower the boiling point of the alcohol so we don’t have to heat up the tincture/ extract and preserve any heat sensitive compounds. Lastly we burn the leftovers in a calcination process and extract the salt minerals from the ash. Finally we recombine the mineral salts (the body) with the first extraction and alcohol, which then refluxes under a vacuum, to create a full spectrum spagyric tincture.
