What is Alchemy?
If you ask people, most of them will answer that alchemy is this superstitious idea from the middle ages, which is all about trying to transform different base metals into gold. But even if a huge part of alchemy is about refining indeed, this couldn’t be much further from the truth – Alchemy would be much more correctly translated into the following explanation: The knowledge of how matter relates to consciousness and how consciousness relates to matter.
What’s Does It All Mean?
If you study Alchemy, you will see that it has gone hand in hand with humanity since the beginning of time. It has been a large part of science and medicine in many ancient cultures worldwide. In the form of astrology, herbalism, biology, and the study of nature itself. Alchemits thru time have been facinated by how nature evolves, transforms and refines itself from the base metals to the minerals up to to the plant and animal kingdom. So even if Alchemy today can be viewed at as alternative or superstition, it has a well-intertwined history with today’s modern chemistry, medicine and science.
When you start studying alchemy, you will discover a whole new world of science from a more holistic perspective. And see that whats it’s all about is much more than just physical matter. Alchemy includes both polarities of life and how these corresponde to one another: Visible and nonvisible, the micro and macro cosmos, matter and consciousness.
Origin & The Split in Modern Time
Alchemy is known to have its origin in ancient Egypt, but exactly where it comes from is hard to say. But we can find traces of alchemy in many countries and cultures worldwide. For many thousands of years, alchemy has been a part of humanity as the true science, but during the industrializing, alchemy has slowly fallen into oblivion.
The fact that alchemy has been seen as suspicious humbug is actually not very hard to understand. The ancient authors to the old scripts, books, and texts that were written, often hid their messages behind symbols and codes. This was made for a simple reason so that the knowledge would not end up in the wrong hands and would only be deciphered by the adept of pure heart. Only the wise and open-minded was seen as worthy to carry the keys to unlock nature. This made the alchemist understand how body, mind and soul were ultimately connected and how the extension of life would be possible. But the alchemists were worried that the knowledge would end up in the of the greedy, where it could be used for evil means, power and control.
So instead, the obscure and coded texts become of non-interest for the modern western man, who together with the globalizing and industrializing made huge progress in science and knowledge. Our modern science split off from spirituality and focused solely on the physical side of matter, and only on what could be observed and measured. In many parts of the world, alchemical knowledge is still a big part of science, herbalism, and astrology. Many natural herbalists and people of traditional cultures say that western and modern science has forgotten a very important part of the knowledge of health, the relationship between matter and consciousness.
